Rape! are we protesting right?

Living in the times of fervent protests against government inaction, spearheaded by the youth, I find my nonchalance a glaring blot on my otherwise opiniated views. I have been a bystander and a silent spectator to the protests against governmental apathy towards an increased incidence of crime against women in the country. Over this period of silence, I have developed an understanding that the knee-jerk reaction of the society towards deeper issues like rape is only counter-productive in a country like ours where polity and decision makers are defined by perception and not conviction. It makes an incomplete measure to gherao the Home Minister’s residence and force the government into action and bring a new law against rape. Crime against women is an issue of a moral and ethical bankruptcy in our society. It is a problem that is endemic to our society. It requires a national awakening to realise the equal status of women in society and this awakening begins at home, at schools, at colleges, at temples and in our hearts. By being satisfied by mere passage of a law against rape we are just playing gallery to our ‘perception’ politicians giving them a wrong sense of action which will not solve the problem. What we require is a long-term proactive commitment by our leadership to address not only one facet of the problem but to look deeper and find permanent solution to cure the Indian society.

  1. Punishment follows the criminal act. That is, when much irreparable and irreversible damage has already been done . So though right action to bring justice is important ,nearly not as much as what should precede it .

Government can only eliminate or isolate those harm inflicting elements effectively by making and unfailingly-without delay or exception- implementing the needed law .

The system they follow in America requires the public offender ( having served his/her sentence) to enlist his address and the degree of offense . Which ensures that the surroundings are aware and can protect their kids and 'selves.
Though it is not possible to foster the same system with efficiency in our country due to lack of organized residential units and huge population but the crux can be brought in place through the resources available. Crux being awareness.

Most of the molestations or rapes are done by family members which means that we have gone wrong at the very node of our roots.

What we need is media to responsibly and sensibly bring forth the knowledge about sex ,alcoholism, drugs and equality with right context.

We need better,non-abusive growing environment for kids, that is where they feel loved appreciated and cherished.

We need responsible schools where teachers place more emphasis on importance of self-defense rather than victimizing oneself, prevent bullying, counseling kids through puberty, sex and relationship issues and not to not make sex or biological growth a taboo or off limits topic.

We need to take responsibility for better kids who will grow to become sensible citizens . To not patronize our husbands or oppress our wives. To give space and respect to every fellow being. If we all start at home, a difference will ensue.

    Faithful Reader.
    Keep on breaking the silence.

    1. true, its the action at as you said the "node of the root" that will solve the problems. But we have to be patient as such a process may start showing effect over a generation or two
